Admiral Harry Harris

Former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea

Admiral Harris served as U.S. Ambassador to South Korea from 2018-2021. The first Asian-American to hold 4-star rank in the U.S. Navy, he commanded U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet, U.S. 6th Fleet, Striking/Support Forces NATO, JTF Guantanamo, and Patrol Wing 1. He participated in Operations Attain Document, Desert Shield/Storm, Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Willing Spirit, and Odyssey Dawn. He has flown over 4,400 hours, including over 400 combat hours.

From 2011-2013, Harris was the Chairman of the JCS's representative to the Secretary of State.  He also served as the U.S. Roadmap Monitor for the Mid-East Peace Process, traveling extensively to Israel to meet with Israeli and Palestinian Authority leaders.

Born in Japan and reared in Tennessee and Florida, Harris graduated from Annapolis in 1978. He holds master’s degrees from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. He did post-graduate studies at Oxford University and completed MIT's Seminar 21 fellowship. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
