Long is the first woman confirmed by the Senate as an assistant secretary of defense. She served as Secretary of Defense Robert Gate’s senior representative to the National Security Council and represented him with his foreign counterparts. Long also was named the first female chair of NATO’s senior-most nuclear decision making High Level Group. She adds to those credentials more than a decade of Central Intelligence Agency operational experience (1986-99). After defense, she served as a senior expert for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander and as advisor to the Colombian Defense Minister. Her endeavors include the Harvard Belford Center’s U.S.-Israel Track II Iran negotiations, Council on Foreign Relations’ North Korea “Sharper Choice” report and the Bi-partisan Policy Center’s Syria and Middle East projects. Long founded three multi-million dollar companies serving foreign governments and Fortune 50 companies. She is a Cipher Brief expert and serves on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Defense and Aerospace Export Council and USAID’s Advisory Committee on Foreign Aid.
